In this lesson we discuss examples of figurative language used in advertising, and demonstrate that many slogans are not literally true. Learners often battle with figurative language, especially in genres of texts which they already find difficult to understand, such as poetry. To help learners develop confidence in identifying and understanding figurative usage, find as many examples as possible from everyday sources that the learners will know and find simple to understand. As we focus specifically on advertising, you might like to collect examples from familiar TV and print adverts.
